On the Canidae website, it appears that it is an independently owned company, but there are reports (or rumors) that it has been purchased by Proctor and Gamble. Which is true?
From what little I was able to Google in 15 minutes, Canidae Corp is an independent company that produces Felidae, Canidae, and Equidae. The trick is who they've contracted to actually manufacture their foods... which is Diamond (as far as I can tell).
Diamond actually manufactures several different brands of cat and dog foods. It's much like a large bakery or canning facility might produce for several different brands according to the brand recipes. The producing facility is supposed to follow the recipes according to their clients' specifications... supposed to.
Update: I fed my IBD kitty who hates pate style food but is supposed to be eating only duck (and some salmon), some of the Canidae Pure Duck and Duck Liver canned food and she loved it. The food consists of little pieces, not a "loaf." She ate almost the whole can and kept it down. She never eats a whole can of anything, not even the Wellness canned salmon, which she likes. Even though the food has chicken fat in it and the only bird she is supposed to have is duck, it did not affect her adversely at all.
I do still have some concerns about the food being produced by a larger company though. Also, is it bad to feed a cat so much liver?
