Eight years ago, I adopted a 5 year old purebred classic silver tabby American
Short Hair cat. I'd been scanning many, many rescue web sites looking for the
kitty who would grab my attention. It had been many years since my last kitty
had died at the age of 18, and my heart wanted a kitty to love. I kept
returning to the Town Cats website in Morgan Hill, California, and there were
two silver tabbies one called Casey and the other Joe Grey (after a well known
detective novel series starring a grey tabby cat). I would study one photo then
the other and I did this for weeks. I kept returning to the photo of Joe Grey
and couldn't believe that he was still available. There was just something
special about him.

Memorial Day weekend of 2005 was coming up and I thought that would be a good
time to bring a cat home so I could give it lots of attention before returning
to work on Tuesday. So I sent an email to Town Cats and was prepared to wait
for them to respond. They responded within 30 minutes and essentially said,
"Come and get him, he is yours!"

This is how I found my beloved Whimsey cat (the name Joe Grey just didn't fit
this glorious creature). I brought him home and the first thing that happened
was that, not used to having a cat underfoot, I accidentally stepped on his
paw. He ran under my dining room table and didn't come out for 2 hours. And
the looks I got! I was horrified and mortified. This was not the way I wanted
to introduce him to his new home.

However, never one to hold grudges, he emerged from underneath my table and I
was able to convince him that he was safe and that mom would be more careful of
where she put her feet.

So, yes, I'm still grieving for him, but Memorial Day weekend holds some very
special and treasured memories. I had no knowledge then that THIS kitty was
going to be the special one, my soul mate, and the light of my life. To this
day I still marvel at having found him. So even though he was five years old
and I had no idea which day was his birthday, this is a very special "GOTCHA"
day. The day he came home.

Hugs,
Elizabeth, Angel Whimsey, Merlin, Fancy, and Magic

Thanks so much Laurie, and My4LLMA.  When I wrote this I was very happy in recalling a very precious memory.  Now, a day later, the tears have come.  There is no expiration date for grief.

Hugs,

Elizabeth, Angel Whimsey, Merlin, Fancy & Magic
