I have worked with developmentally disabled for 19 yrs as a nurse. I know, developmental disabilities are not the issue here, but its the same basic principle. I couldn't even begin to count the times one of the very sepcial people I Help to care for has encountered a similar situation. However, I am most definitely not defending the man and his rude comment, but I will say it stemmed from fear and pure ignorance. I would have called him on his remark (done it many a time) and said loudly "Just what makes you think we need a keeper?" and press the issue, make a scene, demand an answer. Call attention to the fact that he is rude, and ignorant. I bet next time he would think before speaking.
