Fabric softener - never. I really could care less about having slightly softer clothes compared to all the damage it does.
And we use organic washing powder, too. Makes the clothes soft and smelling beautiful, and so much less unbiodegradable waste. It's not hard to change to these alternatives, nor do they deliver lesser results. You just have to be willing to care.
