I never heard of that tradition until I married a man who was raised catholic. Is this only a catholic tradition? I for one am glad that our family never had this practice.

As Ashley says, certainly Catholic, but not only Catholic. I do observe this (Anglican) but I find it useful not to think of it as plain denial of something, but rather self-discipline -- which can include denial, of course, but doesn't necessarily. It's a lot of years since I stopped giving up some favourite treat -- that being the usual sort of thing -- and began using this as a way of being intentional about changing some habit, behaviour, attitude that I'm not happy about in myself.Originally Posted by Momofmany
