What are you feeding your post PU surgery cat?

My Romeo had PU surgery last June after repeatedly getting crystals in his urine. The surgery seems to be successful but I'm having problems feeding him and my other 10 cats. My vet said that because he had crystals, he can never eat anything but prescription food again. I started using Hills to feed Romeo and the other cats but it's so expensive! I'm on a fixed income and money is pretty tight. I'm now trying feeding the other cats non-prescription food under my supervision and feeding Romeo separately. Unfortunately, Romeo realizes what is going on and is now refusing to eat his Hills and when he decides he doesn't want to eat, it's very difficult to change his mind. Does anyone else have a similar situation?

Hi. I searched this site for others whose cats have had PU surgery to see if they mentioned what their cats eat, and I didn't find much.

First tell your vet that Romeo is refusing the food and ask for alternatives. Secondly, I presume you had a urology specialist involved in Romeo's surgery/care, so get in touch with them. I am sure they would be a good source for food recommendations as I cannot imagine that they haven't had to deal with the same feeding issue that you are having.

There are other brands besides Hill's, some are non-prescription - and of course any brand you use ideally should be canned food, due to the extra moisture when compared to dry foods. If you can find one desirable enough for Romeo, maybe he won't mind that he is eating something different.

Hello Furballsmom and FeebysOwner. Thank you for replying. I will ask my vet if she has a nutritional consultant and if she used a urology consultant. As far as I know she doesn't have either one. I'm feeding my other cats Iams Urinary Care food because I thought that if Romeo accidentally eats that food, it wouldn't be as harmful as regular cat food. My vet was pretty adamant that he should only have prescription food. Does anyone know of a prescription brand that is cheaper than Hills? Right now I'm paying $113 for a 15.5 lb bag and it sure goes quickly.

All the prescription brand foods aren't going to be cheap. And it amazes me that no canned food was recommended, as opposed to dry. Not that they are any less expensive. But, if Romeo were to eat the canned food, as I said before, he might not care that he isn't eating the same food as the others. There are Hills, Royal Canin, and even Purina Urinary care foods that are canned. There are other non-prescription foods too. (See links below)

If your vet can't advise of anyone to help from a nutritional standpoint, the least they can do is offer the canned prescription versions - to try with Romeo. You can even use dry food, crushed up, as a topper to see if that helps him get interested in the canned versions.

Short of that, tbh, another vet that is willing to be a bit more helpful might be something for you to consider.

Thank you so much for the valuable information FeebysOwner. I will check out the products you listed. As of now, Romeo is eating Hill's canned ocean fish CD everyday and I hope that continues. Also, my thanks to silent meowlook for the resource on cat nutrition. You've both been very helpful. Thanks again.
