Weird stuff in between my cats toes

I just noticed it today and my cat doesn’t like his paws touched in general so it’s hard to get a good long look at it but it looks weird and there’s also a little hole on the paw pad itself it’s might be hard to tell but in person it does look like a hole and not just something on his pad which I think is weird I don’t know what it could be. Also in between his toes it looks almost like rubbed raw and not scabbed over. To me it doesn’t look infected necessarily just irritated maybe and crusty. He’s an indoor only cat and I did get him from a shelter and I’ve had him for 6 months now but he was a healthy cat when I got him. the only problem was that he was under weight and thin hair but that is no longer a problem. Please help do you think I should take him to the vet?

Will he allow you to wash or wipe his paw. From the photo it looks like he has some dirt in-between his pads. If you can clean it, you may be able to see it more clearly.
