I know in my area there are many substandard vets.  I did the vet hopping thing for six years with a chronically ill kitty before I found a good vet that got him on the right track.  My kitty was having severe IBD flares starting at only 18 months of age.  His symptoms mimicked foreign body ingestion so lots of xrays and hospitalizations without anything resolved.

I know people who do rescue do a lot of their own vetting.  I grew up on a farm and it was the same thing.  People with livestock do a lot of their own vetting.  I didn't do that, I just continued looking for a good vet, finally found one, but now I have doubts about the clinic.  My first vet left when she bought an established practice in another state.  The second vet was also very good but she has left.  I have serious doubts about the one that I have now.  My chronically ill kitty needs prescription medication though so I am kind of stuck.
