Has anyone ever heard of this or and tried it? I really prefer to use natural type stuff as much as possible. In one of my pet supply catalogs this diatomaceous earth was advertised as being a flea killer. I wonder if it really works, and with no harm done the cat.

Use of diatomaceous earth for flea control?

I use it but outside the home only not inside. It has low toxicity to animals so I just never want to take the chance and put it indoors where they can easily get to it.

The above link suggest that this substance is safe for all kinds of animals, but I don't know how reliable it may be. Personally, I would be thrilled to find something organic to get rid of fleas. Here in the country we fight a never ending battle against them. Even frontline and those products aren't very effective.

I don't care what that article says. DE is NOT that safe. I use it in my pool filter and there are all kinds of warnings on the bag about making sure you don't breath in any of it or get it in your eyes. This is NOT something IMHO that you should be putting on or around your cat or house. The only place I would use this is outside and taking precautions that you don't breath it in. Just because it's a natural substance does not mean it's safe.

Absolutley. I agree with you regarding the use of a natural method.
Diatomaceous earth is extemly safe and effective. It is important to use
food grade diatom earth for use on a pet. Not garden grade, and NEVER
the type used for swimmng pools. The drawback to this method is that
it is time consuming and it is a commitment for regular use or it won't work.
Since the cat grooms themselves I find it has to be applied every other day.
I first use a flea comb to comb the cat, paying particular attention to the
area arund the face and neck. That's where the darn flea's tend to hide.
Make sure you have a bowl of water to dunk the flea comb in and drown
the fleas. Or I prefer to comb in the bathroom and I quickly slide any fleas
off the comb and toss them in the toliet bowl.
After combing the cat, I dunk the flea comb in the diatom earth and start
at the back of the cat and comb the earth into the cats fur. I get the belly
and the tail as well. Then use small and controlled amounts of powder on the
neck and check area. The powder can irritate the nostrils if a puff of it is breathed in by either you, or your cat.
Always follow the grooming with a treat. My cats have grown to LOVE
this ritual and don't mind at all.
This works better on shorthair cats. Our location is southern enough that
fleas are a big problem. But with this method I rarely have to use advantage
on my cats. Maybe, I have to use a topical (advantage once a season).
