Hi Enzo's Mom.

Great for the lysine..Does your husband, when filling the syringes of food warm the food? This is how I did it to give you an idea.I would pre load 9-12 25cc( this was his daily amount) syringes with vet. iams MaxCal which is 330 calories per can.but like gravel and has to be put through a sieve a couple of times.Anyways after filling these syringes I would take like 3 or 4 of them & put them tip down in a old plastic marg container filled with hotwater.Cats hate anything cold.I picked up a 3 pak of bibs from Walmart (Cheap) as it does not all get in them.Bibs were very helpful.i sat him on the bathroom counter 7 had an old cutting board that was lge enough to cover the bathroom sink.Put a towel there.Maxwell would sit on the towel so i wasn't bending over.I would close the bathroom door.So we were both in there. After a few attempts from the side of the mouth ONLY.not aiming towards the throat if he got a little antsy i would let him jump down on the bathroom floor and get his bearings.Constantly i was talking to him telling him what a good man he was.he was.he would literally curl his side of his lip up to accept the syringe.I called him Elvis.it was three months of this but I have no regrets. So i just wanted to give you an idea of how i did it.That it was warmed up.not microwaved & that they need a break from time to time.if he licks it from the fingers keep plunging small amounts on the fingers. When Maxwell finally after 3 months started getting better he too began licking my fingers.he had gained 3.8 lbs in 3 months.i used a baby scale. But depending on how much Enzo weighs you can get a cheap digital food scale from Walmart.$20.If he isn't too big.Maxwell was 8 lbs.i think the scale went up to 10 lbs and I used an old shoe box.i would weigh the shoe box first,so i knew how much it weighed.I weighed him every day.Water how much water is Enzo getting? Is he drinking water? He will be dehydrated that is a given. Can you syringe bottle water or pedialyte very carefully?.Dehydration makes them feel like crap and also not enough calories.the more the food the better they feel.including fluids.Cats actually drink very litle. In this case i would be supplementing him some water. Not cold.Actually I would be doing subq fluid therapy.HTH C. sorry about the typing i know I'm the pitts.lol

That's so great that your guy was receptive. Enzo is not. We do warm the food and water before giving it to him, all to no avail. My husband straddles him and we do the "kitty burrito" using a towel that our vet showed us. The problem isn't really that he tries to get away, it's that he won't swallow or spits out the food.

Your only into your first week.If he doesn't try to get away.Do not restrain him & have him in a small room.Like the bathroom.Cat's hate being restrained.i was always told by my Internist don't restrain.Of course their are some kitties out there that will rip you to shreds but the less stress the better. Are you giving him too much at one time? There may be a video on you tube of syringing or I believe that group may have one.Very small increments.Sometimes you finger feed. The Faf group has dealt with 1000's of cats/kittens from all over the world with all kinds of personalities.they are truly the experts.there is no rushing it.i know that much.it is time consuming.very much so.But a need to LIVE.C.

If he is really that resistant, he's the perfect candidate for an E-tube.  Do not ever try the nasal tube!!!  Print the article about Pina and the E-Tube and take it to your vet.  It has a good x-ray of the tube placement and it's written by a vet (most vets worth their salt respect good articles by other vets!)  If your vet isn't comfortable with doing an E-tube, ask for a referral to a cat specialist who is.  I do't think it should be all that expensive because he doesn't have to be under long and it's a fairly simple procedure to place it.

He actually had the e tube placed Friday! It was inexpensive but we got a few extras, some X-rays and a culture of the junk in his nose and it was about $750. He is doing SO MUCH better, other than not eating on his own he is back to his old self-playing, cuddling. I wish i would've known about the tube sooner I probably would've done it a day or two sooner to prevent him from having lost more weight. Now it's just a matter of when he will eat on his own; it feels like it's never going to happen! But the vet says he is still probably unable to smell the food and as soon as the congestion clears he'll be eating on his own again. I'm praying!!

Thank you so much! The e tube has really taken the stress out of feeding. I also bought lysine and we are able to give him that through the tube as well so hopefully he'll be all healed up soon!

Hi Enzo's Momma.that is great news!! The lysine is excellent too.Did the Faf group give you some ideas of foods to try? There are foods with alot more calories. If not maybe ask them as they are the expertise in that dept.I used Max Cal by Iams.Vet food. But you have to put it through a wire strainer a couple of times. But maybe not for a feeding tube.If I didn't do that the syringe would get plugged.330 calories per tuna size can.Very high fat recovery /critical care food. They will know of it.Almost twice A/D & Also Wellness Core grain free turkey I think from petsnmart or pets store is also over I think like 230 or 240 calories. Also very palatable. And Evo 95% turkey. But they would have the best advice.I'm so elated!! Hugs to Enzo & his Family  .C

Thank you so so much!! We've been giving him hills z/d through the tube because of his IBD. But he just started eating on his own two days ago and for that we've been giving him the a/d. Because of the newly diagnosed IBD I'll have to do trial and error with proteins to feed him once he's over the URI. I am so so grateful that he's eating again. Thank you for the well wishes!!

I'm so glad you got the E-tube for him, and as you noted, that has healed your relationship with him because you no longer are trying to force feed him.  And the E-tube is giving him nourishment and NOW you say he is starting to eat on his own too.  It sounds like everything is going in the right direction.  You can thank our @Dr Kris for the informative article about Pina and the E-Tube.  He has written several articles for us AND he has his own blog, too.

I just wanted to update-Enzo is doing MUCH better! He's eating on his own, the e tube is out and he's acting like his old self. He still has a bit if residual stuffiness which I'm hoping will go away soon. Now we're just waiting for the site on his neck to heal where the tube came out and we'll be all set! Thank you all for the wonderful advice and help!

He's almost there! Now I'm just a little worried about the lip licking but he's doing so much better than he was. The e tube was a literal life saver! Thank you so much!
