UCLA gunman had a cat

I would hope that this cat is taken to the local shelter and anonymously put up for adoption (assuming the cat is healthy). 

Not sure which forum this should go in... if this one is a poor choice.

I think this is something the police/FBI, whoever investigates the crime handles whenever they encounter animals at the scene of a crime.  They MUST have some sort of protocol.

S.O.P. here when somebody is arrested, killed or whatever is for the police to take any pets to a shelter if family, friends or neighbors can't immediately take them. That's probably the case in most localities.
