Two cats: Male/Male or Female/Male?

I have a male cat and I am planning on adopting another cat.  What has worked best for you: two males, or a female and a male? 

Is there much of a difference?  They would all be fixed of course.

It depends on the individuals. I've found that females tend not to like other females but neutered males tend to get along with either gender. Just find a cat whose personality will get alongg with your current boy's personality.
