We had noticed a feral cat roaming our neighborhood for close to 2 years and did not start feeding her until early 2011 as we felt sorry for it. I had thought it was a male as I had never seen it pregnant before. In June 2011 I noticed it had a swollen tummy eating by our back door. We had our home on the market to be sold and this poor cat is used to us feeding her so I was able to find a feral cat rescue organization and borrowed a trap and was able to get her after 3 tries. I had given our vet a heads up that I wanted to bring her in to abort her babies (she was ready to drop at any time) and have her fixed and checked out. All she had was hook worms and we got rid of them with medication she survived the surgery just fine. She was really freaked out when we trapped her as it was obvious she had not had any human contact before. We have 4 other indoor cats and we kept the feral who we call Sox now, in a half bath for 5 months and we spent a lot of time with her, trying to get her used to us. She took right to the litter box.
We sold our home in Fl. in Dec. 2011 and we traveled to NV. with all 5, and Sox and all the guys/gals rode so well and gave us no problems at all. We stopped 6 nights so they could do their thing and get fed and watered. We kept Sox in the motel bathroom each night and she always got in her carrier we had in their with her so there was no problem getting her ready to roll each morning.
We have had her for over a year now and she has the run of the house but feels more secure in our master bedroom as that is where her base is and heads for that room if we encounter her in another part of the house. In the day time she lays in front of the sliding glass window in her own bed and in the evening she gets on our bed in her bed until we go to bed and she goes in the adjoining closet next to the master bath room for the night but does roam at night. She is very content and has her tail up most of the time and does not mind us getting close but she does not want us to touch her. She lays in her bed in ways she could not being in the wild as she would not feel safe. We did a good thing for her and we feel good we rescued her from the outdoors. A neighbor told me she had at least 2 litters while she was a feral before we got her. She meows at us when I bring wet food to her in the evening. She is a real sweet girl and is not agressive. Never heard her growl or hiss so far. Two of our other cats kind of annoy her sometimes so I just get the squirt bottle out and that takes care of that.
