Oh don't worry, I constantly questioned everything I was doing with my current litter, and mama cat was doing most of the work! And I don't think there is a "right" way. You just do what you can with the resources you have, and hope for the best. The kitties that are stray or abandoned generally aren't in the best health to start with, so it's an uphill battle, and you've given him the best chance he could possibly have.
