One thing I have certainly heard of here is a kitten may go to its first show with the breeder if its new family cannot pick it up in time to get the registration transferred and all the paperwork done beforehand.
More often here though if you end up with a decent show cat as a pet and express an interest in showing you will find the breeder on your doorstep on the morning of the show waiting to pick you up. All the breeders I know are really really great about supporting kitten families who want to get into showing. Heck, my boys aren't showable for one reason or another, but I still go to shows with their breeder, to help out and have fun and tell her how her babies that she bred are doing!
