My cat has been coughing/gagging periodically for the past couple days. He seems to be using extra effort to swallow at times. He is a hunter so I thought maybe he had some fur/feathers whatever caught in his throat. If so, I would have thought it would have come up by now. He seems to be alright other than that. Not sure if I should take him to the vet or not.

I would take him to a vet. Since it has been a few days it is either something else or something he can't dislodge.

Good luck.

Coughing is a symptom of some serious diseases, such as those related to the heart. Just to be safe, you should take him to the vet. Serious illnesses/diseases left untreated may not be reversible if detected too late.

Since it's coughing combined with difficulty swallowing I'm thinking it might be an obstruction. I'd take him to the vet.
