If you want a vacuum just as effective as the Dyson but without the price tag, try Eureka's The Boss Smart Vac. We have this and it's amazing for pet hair on carpet (we have two long haired cats, plus a labrador retriever). We have the fulminator but I also get a *ton* of hair just by using a grooming rake. I feed hairball treats and hairball gel too. I've noticed that when they eat a hairball formula food, it really helps.
I would much rather have hardwood floors than carpet when it comes to cleaning up pet hair.
