I was not sure where to put this, so if a mod thinks it needs to be somewhere else please feel free to move it.
When my cat had kittens I asked a guy here at work if he was interested in one of them as I knew he had lost one of his cats about six months earlier. It had gotten out and they never found him. He thought about it but I guess he was not ready, which is fine. I can understand not being ready for a new cat. He still had one so I think he was seriously hoping the other cat would return.
Anyway, he just told me his wife bought him a 5 month old siamese kitten for his birthday. Which is fine I have no problem with it until he said that she bought the kitten from some couple that drive around and sell these kittens. He said they had a large van with a whole bunch of cats/kittens in it. Acccording to him they drive all over northeast Ohio.
The even sadder part is he said the kitten is really shy. They first two days he hid under the bed and didn't eat. He said he did finally come out and is eating and using the litter box.
I mentioned how once that kitten gets comfortable he can expect a very chatty cat. He said he was already howling in the middle of the night. He woke them both up and they just gave him some food and then he was okay. I hope they realize that doing that might lead to him waking them up every night wanting food.
I just feel so sad that he didn't understand about back yard breeders and that this poor cat has probably not been socialized at all and on top of that they they don't sound like they researched the breed at all. He did not know that siamese are known for talking and howling.
I wanted so bad to say something but I felt that not only he would be insulted but the fact that is was a present that he would take it as an insult to his wife. I have to work with this guy everyday. I just hope that I can suggest things along the way to help with his new kitty.
I was kind of surprised that after owning at least two cats that he didn't or I guess she didn't do more reasearch other than looking for something that is "pretty"
the things I wanted to say.....
