It's important to trim so that the scissors are closing from top to bottom on the claw. If you do it so that it's like your cutting paper you will sometimes cause some of the layers of the claw to come off in different places than where you make the cut. Not harmful to your cat, she'll just sharpen them off, but if you cut them the right way it won't happen and won't look like it's "shredded". Hard to describe what I mean without pictures... it's the opposite of how people do it.

I would NEVER declaw my cats. My mom is against that as well. We have a scratching post for Jade. He LOVES it and everytime I come home, he greets me and then goes right to post and scratches, lol. Carmella isn't into that though, but she's much older than him and she just sleeps all the time, lol. She's outside now and then and I see her scratching on trees. Cat's claws are their only self-defense they have...
