I adopted two kittens and one has been poorly on and off for some time.

Visit one : She initially had the runs and mucus - which the vet gave her antibiotics anti inflammatory stomache medicine and wormer, she was ok and the runs stopped and then she started to be down not play full so i took her back

Visit two: her gums where she was teething were bloody and sore so they gave me pain killer medicine and gave her an antibiotic injection. A week or so later and she started being sick

Visit three: Vets gave her injection to stop her being sick and a hydration drink to syringe her as she was slightly dehydrated, they also advised to stop taking the pain killer medicine as that can make her sick. the sickness stopped. After a short while she started to get lethargic and one night whilst she laid on me i moved in my sleep to be woken by a lout bang and then another, it seemed she hadnt moved when i had and hit the bed and the floor before she reacted.

Visit 4: Kitty was taken in and put on a drip. Vets said she wouldnt eat but she was being fussy as only likes certain food so i took that in and she ate and drank. First blood test said low white cells, but these were checked on day two and all results were around about normal. so they sent off bloods to test for FIV Felv and toxoplasmosis and chrone - all were clear. Kitty had been at home but still wasnt right so we took her back again.

Visit 5- this time for stool samples, whilst we waited for results over the weekend the vet gave her a different type of antibiotic, vitamin B and a treatment for giardia just incase it was that, unfortunately the vit b worked so well that she gulped food down and developed the runs, i have been giving her small amounts of food hourly or hour and a half and also getting up at 2 and 4 am, syringe feeding her water to top up her hydration to try and stop the runs, she seems to eat and stomache is like a ball then she goes and its very smelly and mustard coloured, she hasnt got the runs anymore but it is very soft still and not normal coloured. I have just been advised that the samples sent off were all clear and normal, so we still have no idea whats wrong with her. She has picked up a bit but isnt what a playful 7 month old kitten should be and is very small for her age. The vets asked a few times if she was definately the correct age and after checking where i got her from she is. I noticed two days ago that she sseemed a bit snuffly when breathing and called the vets and tehy thought that this may be where she wasnt cleaning herself and food was drying around her nose, however i picked her very playful sister up today and she seemed a bit snuffly too. Im back off to the vets again tomorrow but just thought that asking as many people that i can i might have one reply that would help her. Im really lost with what to do next.

Thank you in advance for any help you may give.

Hello Jane! I'm so very sorry about your kitty! I once had a kitty with similar problems... are her eyes clear? You know how their eyes reflect light... when they're reflcting, can you see brighter specs floating around?

Stay strong! I can only imagine the toll this is taking on you! 8)

Hi thank you for you message- her eyes look normal no discharge and back to her pretty eyes. I will check for brighter specs tomorrow in better light. What was wrong with your kitty? She did develop a squint in one eye and when I looked at the white undereye lid it's quite red. She still has poorly tummy and is very gassy which is released when I pick her up.

Oh no :eek:hno: the poor little baby. It just sounds like a really bad URI to me. I have seen some pretty severe cases at the shelter with the kittens. Some that I didn't even think could make it BUT they always seem to pull through and become healthy, happy little kitties :D. Loads of vibes for this little one and good luck at the vet today :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

You could try a second vet to see if they see something that the first vet hasn't noticed.

I had a kitten that I found about 5 weeks old that had problem after problem for the first couple of years. First digestive problems (was on meds and some yogurt to get his digestive system stabilized), then gum issues (was put on strong antibiotics for a few months to clear that up), then respiratory issues (on and off on antibiotics). He finally got old enough to be able to fight things off on his own. He was also very small - about 6 pounds at a year old and didn't start to really grow into his adult weight of 14 pounds until he was 2. I think small size goes along with health challenges at that age.

Some kittens who have had a rough start take more time to develop a strong immune system, and you just need to work very closely with your vet to find the combination of things to keep them healthy.

Unfortunately we can't diagnose things over the net, we can only throw ideas out for you to consider.

Sending healing vibes for you baby. :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Thank you for your message -it sounds as if your kitty also had a rough time, Amber is just over 7 months and around 4lb, ive managed to get her to go from 3.3lb to 4lb in the last 5 days so thats possitive, its great to finally hear a story similar to Ambers as i was starting to lose hope that she would ever get better and that we would never find a cure.

The vets are pleased today that she has gained weight and is brighter, although were not sure why she is squinting and closing her left eye as no sign of infection etc. So we are going to try another week of antibiotics and go back on Monday to see how she is doing. Hopefully she will get a lot better.

Vets are really happy with her weight gain from 3.3lb to 4lb in 5 days, im glad my hard work and getting up 2 to 3 times inthe night to give her food is doing her good. We have put her on the same antibiotics for another week and i am going back on Monday. I have used my vets for many years and they have always been brilliant so i do trust them and as she she is a bit perkier i will see  how she is on Monday. Im just slightly concerned that she still has very mushy stools and is bloated and has bad wind. Today is the first day in about 3 weeks that we have been told she is hydrated and we havent got to syringe feed her water :)

Amber seems to be feeling alot happier inher self over the last few days and is even being playful and vocal when she wants food. She is still on Antibiotics but comes off her vitamin B today (its a appetite stimulant) so im hoping that she continues to eat as well as she is and gains a bit more weight before Monday :) Ill keep you posted.

One thing I noticed about my sickly boy was that he was always a bit sicker right before a growth spurt. Growing takes a lot of energy out of them. My little one wouldn't gain any weight for months, then suddenly jump up a pound. I think this is another symptom of cats that are having difficulty thriving early on.

Kitty update, Amber seemed to really pick up and was even playful and annoying her sister up until Saturday. Unfortunately where the vet had stopped her vitamin b her appetite had got less and less so she wasnt eating alot, that was until she found one of my other cats treats and ate a fair amount :( needless to say Sunday she had a very bad tummy all day and wouldnt drink at all and would only eat dry Gastrointestinal biscuits that i got from the vet. She slept a lot Sunday day and night, it almost felt like we were back to square one.

I had a vets check  up for her this morning and shes dropped her weight that we managed to get on her (she 1.6 kg again) and is now in the vets under observation :(  The poorly tummy really seems to have taken it out of her! The vets have said that we will now stop the antibiotics that shes been on for 2 weeks and put her back on the Vitamin B. Really wish we could find out whats wrong with her......

Thank you all for your help - I am pleased to be able to now say that Amber is doing well. The Oxford Cat clinic found that she has Mal Absorpion and whilst not curable can be managed, it possible means specialist food, maybe medication and life time injections but she is doing so well. In 4 weeks she has gone from a lathargic 1.4kg kitten to a 2,2kg kittens with so much energy. Now thats the best xmas present ever :)

So glad to hear she's feeling better.  It just "hurts" to see a kitten hurt, doesn't it?
