Fairly new cat owner here. How do you take a cat's temperature?
Usually to be accurate, cats temperature is taken by inserting the thermometer into the anus which is kind of difficult as sometimes it's a 2 man job. One to hold the cat and the other insert the thermometer as some cats are restless.

Other ways are, you can use the thermometer that we use. One of it is the one that we stick into our ear or point at our forehead and takes an auto reading. You can carry your cat and hold him still while he sits on your lap or whichever way is more easier and put the thermometer gently into the ear of you cat.
The other way is use a Infared thermometer but avoid pointing into the eyes of the cat, with or without the led light on, push the fur back against the flow of the fur and and take the reading from the skin.

Hi. Unless you have taken an infant's temp with a rectal thermometer, you may not want to try do that to your cat, but that is what is the most basic way, as noted above I personally would not suggest you try it if you are not familiar with what it takes. Also as mentioned above, there are ear thermometers that can be used too, but to be honest that is not really any easier when dealing with a cat, and less accurate due to how far down the ear canal you need to go which can also be a scary endeavor.

Symptoms of a fever in cats include lethargy, loss of appetite, decreased grooming, and shivering. Here are other things to check to see if your cat might have a fever/temp without resorting to a thermometer.

You don’t. But really, you need a quick read flexible tip digital thermometer. You don’t want to use vasoline, Judy a water based lube. You would be taking it rectally, best with kitten on the side. Do not pull the tail up.
Probably will be way to stressful for you and the cat.

Best to just do an ancillary temp where you lay the thermometer under the front leg in the arm pit. Take that reading and add 2 degrees. It is a rough estimate of the temp.
Why do you want to take the temp?
