I noticed that a couple of sub-brands of Purina had sugar as a last ingredient... how unhealthy/bad is this?
Ok... I've been thinking the same. Friskes and... mh, what whas the name again... pussy something. A blue multipack.I wouldn't feed it, at least not on a regular basis. I don't think cats ought to have much sugar.
What brand/flavor is it? I've only seen sugar in some flavors of Meow Mix, no Purina brands though.
Exactly my thoughts... probably to just add cheap filling? But that doesn't make much sense either... byproducts of animals got to be just as cheap.
I don't see the benefit because they can't taste sweet from what I read. Like when my cat wants my donut, it's not about the glaze: It's the bread.
Do you live in the US? I feed my cats canned Friskies and it doesn't have added sugar (well, I suppose I haven't read every label, I'm not eliminating the possibility of a different flavor having it. But not the flavors I use). Plus I'm not aware of any Purina cat food with the name "pussy" in it, and am not sure if they would name it that nowadays . I have no idea what ingredients they use in other countries though.Friskes and... mh, what whas the name again... pussy something. A blue multipack.
She doesn't have diabetes, but can't it cause diabetes?
Sugar in any form is a definite no-no for diabetic catsFor all other cats, sugar probably isn't harmful but cats can't taste sweet.
No, I live in Norway. Friskies has added sugar here. https://www.purina.no/katter/vare-merker/pussi This is the one... probably just norwegian (smart move not calling it pussy, haha).Do you live in the US? Meow Mix wet food is the only one I've seen so far with sugar listed.
I think they use it as coloring, because sugar browns up nicely when cooked at high temps. So that the food doesn't look pasty gray.
Sugar will not cause diabetes. Diabetes is caused by the pancrease not being able to produce insulin normally. This can be caused by genetics, a poor high carb diet, steroid use, and maybe a few other things.

Wouldn't too much sugar cause the diet to be too high in carbs?Sugar will not cause diabetes. Diabetes is caused by the pancrease not being able to produce insulin normally. This can be caused by genetics, a poor high carb diet, steroid use, and maybe a few other things.
It's a shame, because the ingredients are very good otherwise. It's just the sugar as the last ingredient...@Willowy - Yes, in theory. However, it's important to remember that the sugars in certain wet cat foods are added in very small quantities - it's usually the last ingredient on the list. A number of foods (especially the pate style ones) with added sugars don't contain any other carb sources, so will not, in fact, constitute a high-carb diet
@Chint - I really wouldn't worry about causing diabetes. The biggest risk factor (other than genetics, which is out of your control) is obesity.
