Most registered professional breeders will not let a kitten go until it is at least 12 weeks old.  This lets mama cat teach the young one some cat manners and show them how to manipulate the humans around them.

My little girl was 7 weeks when we got her as well. But she was weaned and eating hard food when we got her. She just clung to me more at the beginning until she adjusted to being away from her mom and litter mates. I think all animals are different, some need to be with their moms longer than others.

I found my youngest in a dumpster at 5 weeks, he started suckling on my older (6mo) female cat even though she was fixed and had no milk. He still does it to this day and he is perfectly healthy.
