I have an 8 yr old domestic shorthair, neutered cat named Pumpkin. I will try to include as much detail as possible. We live in Southern California near the foothills in Claremont.
For the past few months he has had an allergic reaction to something. I don't know what it is. He will start vomiting and his face will swell up. This began around April or May of this year and it happens about once a month.
Last week I took him into the emergency vet because he continued to vomit and his ears were red. His retching and vomiting stopped the minute I put him in the cat carrier. The vet in that case gave him an injection for the nausea. He recovered quickly.
Last night I had to take him in again, same symptoms, vomiting and facial swelling. Emergency vet said he is likely getting bitten by something but I see no puncture marks like from a spider or a sting from an insect. I've also seen him eat spiders with no ill effect.
We've had alot of ants recently which I have under control. But there are still a few here and there. He could be eating them I suppose. They are the small brown house ants. I don't think they bite and I'm unsure if they cause allergies.
I also fed him a bit of canned food that has guar gum in it (Blue buffalo wilderness salmon) I put some olive oil in it for hairball control. I read online that Guar gum may cause an allergic reaction in some cats.
So I know this is long. I wonder if anyone has had experience with this and how they solved the issue. I cannot afford to keep running to the vet. I NEED to figure out and quick what his issue is.
Other info. He is never lethargic during these episodes and he NEVER has problems breathing. There is no blood in his stool or vomit when it happens. just food and then as it continues it's a yellow liquid. He also has regular stools with no problems with constipation or diarrhea.
PLEASE HELP. need advice quick
