Hello I'm new here; been lurking since we rescued an abandoned feral 4-wk-old kitten (now 4 months old). I credit this site with pointing me in the right direction vis-a-vis wet vs dry food (despite our vet's insistence on dry), and our kitty has easily made the switch to pate - thanks! I'm now becoming a quasi-expert on pricing of Friskies and its store-brand imitators, and just wanted to pass along my latest discovery.
Not long ago someone posted about PetSmart's "Grreat Choice": http://www.thecatsite.com/t/251421/friskies-poultry-platter-vs-grreat-choice-poultry-platter , and pointed out that it's a bit cheaper than Friskies and appears to be lower carb to boot. It runs $0.40/5.5oz and $0.87/13oz.
Well, those of you in the Northeast with access to Stop & Shop supermarkets may have also noticed that their private label "Companion" looks identical to "Great Choice" (as per the ingredient panel). Companion is normally $0.39/5.5oz but is currently on sale at $8/24 cans which comes to only $0.33 each.
Some of the Companion flavors (Mixed Grill, Turkey & Giblets, Beef, and I think a fish one) also come in 13 oz for only $0.69 (not on sale); if you do the math that comes to only $0.29 for 5.5oz of food. Them's pretty cheap kitty eats if you ask me. They also have non-pate varieties for those who prefer shreds and filets.
To find a Stop & Shop store, go to http://www.stopandshop.com/our_stores/locator/store_search.htm - they also do home delivery via Peapod. (No I don't work for Stop & Shop). I even found a kitty collar there that stays on the kitty (unlike one I got at PetSmart), and plastic can lids for much less than the ones at Petco.
Hope somebody benefits from this info, and thanks again for all your help; you've made one happy little pate-lovin' kitty.
