In my household, yes it is common. I don't worry unless I see something in it that is disturbing, a texture that isn't quite normal, or that it is occuring repeatedly over a short period of time. At that point I will jump up every time I hear the hacking sound that comes along with it, so that I can identify which cat is doing it.
Spooky used to puke just about daily. For the last 3+ years of her life, she got 1/2 cc of Reglan before every feeding, which helped enormously. With the 3 that I have now (all long hairs) I find 'gifts' a couple of times a week, which I feel is pretty normal. I seem to find more in the winter, than in the summer. Probably because they have thicker coats, and groom more during the drier weather.
