So about a week ago, I heard my fixed female cat meowing at something
outside. I knew by the meow something was up. She had a smaller cat
cornered and was I guess growling at it. So I jumped in grabbed my cat
& the little cat ran off when I did this.

Just a few minutes ago, my cat was making that strange meow again at the
back door. I saw a cat in our yard. So I let the cat out thinking she would
have a playmate for awhile, and she immediately got aggressive right in this
cats face, and then chased it out the yard. Even went crazy digging a hole
in the snow so she could go under the fence & follow the cat away.

Is this just a territory thing. I'd rather she made friends then enemies. Are
these other cats female also. Would she get along better with a male even
if fixed. I only have 1 cat, and she doesn't have alot of experience with other cats. She was bread in the wild though, so she has good instincts.

Cats are usually pretty territorial. They don't like having other cats on their turf and will chase them off. I don't think there's anything you can do to make your cat accept random cats wandering onto her property.

Were you thinking of getting another cat? With proper introductions, you might be able to help them get along. But you couldn't just bring a new cat into the house and expect her to like it. It would take a slow, careful introduction. And yes, most females would prefer a neutered male as a housemate. They tend to have some rivalry issues with other females.

Cats aren't the neighborly type. They are the get-the-heck-off-MY-territory-or-I'll-bite-you type. 99% of all cats would chase a strange cat off their territory.

I have had up to 4 male cats at the same time. I have never had more than 1 female cat at a time...and for good reason. Female cats tend to really have a harder time getting along. Not true for EVERY cat or in ever situation, but has been my experience.

I agree with both posters above 100%.

Thanks for replying guys.

This site is great for a cat newb like myself.

My cat is usually a pretty big chicken, afraid of anything.
But she was pretty aggressive towards those cats, kinda
shocked me a bit.

I think my cat hates the winter almost as much as I do also.
Maybe some pent up anger there.

Cats are territorial, some more than others. Your house, your yard is her territory, and she didn't like having another cat in her yard.

As for her making friends, I think based on this behavior, she's probably happiest being a loner.

Please be very careful picking up your cat when she's in those "moods". Several members here have been bitten because of mis-placed aggression when they were just trying to break up a fight, and have gone to the hospital with terrible infections!

okay good tip.

She bit me for real when she was just 3 months old & that
hurt like heck. Wouldn't want to get a serious bite now,
I'm sure that would require stitches.
