Some confusion on social behavior

I'm a new pet mom. I feel a little inept right now. Can some answer a question about cat behavior?

My understanding is cats are not as social as dogs are. If cats are not that social, why is my fur boy, cuddling up next to me when I sleep??

some cats are very social and loving, others are more standoffish.  after your cat has spent some weeks getting used to you and his new home, things may change a bit or not. 

the cat in my avatar is 17 and he's also been one who wants and gives lots of affection and likes to sleep with me.  we had a second cat while we had HK for years who liked to be near us but wasn't into much petting and very little cuddling.  since he was a feral rescue, he'd stop my husband from too much cuddling by slashing him

Yep, like the poster above said: Cats have their own personalities just like dogs! You may find some cats that love cuddles and scratches, and others that are happier left alone.
