The Apple (1980)

Wow. Um. Wow. I just don't know how to describe this one. Take the Adam and Eve story and set it in a futuristic 1994, add in 1970's glam rock, mix a dash of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and top it all off with a flying car from Heaven. Oh, and about 12 musical numbers.

I don't know if I'll ever get over seeing this movie. Ever. It's going to haunt my dreams.

I'll admit I didn't make it all the way through this one, but my DVD player gave up. This I believe was for good reason. This movie has several things wrong with it so I'll just post a list.

1. When making a movie about the early 1980's and having time specific costumes it is imperative that one also has time specific music. Switching back and forth between the two is confusing for the audience.

2. If you are going to run a costume theme in your movie you should have an exposition line about why everyone is in leopard print. Again it's confusing and the audience is going to feel slightly under dressed.

3. Act like you want to be in the movie. I swear I saw an extra roll his eyes.

4. Take acting lessons. Memorization doesn't count. Mariah Carey sounds like she's reading the lines off of cue cards.

5. Don't make your rival hotter than you are. Case in point:
Mariah Carey: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001014/
Padma Lakshmi: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0482290/

That is all.

Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000 (2000)

To be honest I could only make it halfway thought this movie. It really is that bad. In a weird way I feel sorry for anyone who was in it, but then again they read the script. They knew how bad it would be.

Why it was so bad:
1. Usually I try not to get all technical on TCS, but this is so bad that any film goer would notice. Every single transitional slide done in this movie is exactly the same. Film school 101 says that is a huge no-no. I'm sure they are now showing this film as an example.

2. All of John Travolta's lines should have ended with: "Moo-ha-ha-ha!". In fact, I think they did. Perhaps there is miles and miles of edited material of him doing just that.

3. Yes that's Forest Whitaker. I know. Your heart is broken. Don't worry though he atoned for his sin by being drop dead amazing in The Last King of Scotland. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455590/

4. You can do one: Make up OR the other: Cod piece. Not both. Just trust me on this one.

5. Don't have your actors make monkey noises. Ever.

Planet Terror (2007) (rated R)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1077258/

This movie worked for me on so many different levels. I just loved it. Robert Rodriguez, the director, set out to make a love letter to all the bad monster movies that influenced him to be a director. Shot in two weeks on a very tight budget the film sings of everything a B movie really should be. It has:

1. Bad/Good over acting.

2. More blood than one can shake a stick at! And it's the best kind too. He took the old splatter packs and put the red/orange stuff in it from the old Italian horror films of the 1960's.

3. Totally unnecessary explosions. Because when one is making a B movie one must blow up everything in his sight.

4. Rose McGowan gets a machine gun leg.

5. Random actor placement of Bruce Willis!

It's fun romp that any serious movie goer should really see. Heck, even if one isn't a huge student of film it's still a really fun movie.
