I recently adopted a 7 week old male kitten, and I noticed that he sneezes over 10 times a day. I was wondering if this is a problem, and if so, what could be done to stop it.
I'm sure someone more experienced than I will be along soon to advise, but I would suggest ringing your vet or vet tech/nurse and asking. That's what they're there for.
Yes. Take him to the vet ASAP. He could be coming down with an upper respiratory infection, which is quite common when you have kitties in a shelter. They can go downhill fast, so I'd get him to the vet.
Stephanie, I was just going to say that!
More than likely they're going to put him on antibiotics... The sooner you go the better! You don't want that to get worse!
Has the kitten seen your vet yet? If not schedule an appointment, he might have an upper respiratory infection and need antibiotics. It's very common in kittens from shelters or pet stores.
The vet can do a very in depth check just to be sure it isn't something serious. They will get his shots started and schedule him an appointment for neutering.
He is so young to be adopted out at seven weeks. 10 to 12 weeks is best for adoption. So keep a close eye on your new addition because at that age they can go down hill real fast. Go luck!!
I was going to schedule an appointment for nuetering so he would have it done in about 3-4 weeks, but how old are they supposed to be before they should have it done, and if he does have an upped respiratory infection, would it too late to ask the vet about in about a month?
If he does have an URI, your vet won't do (or shouldn't) do surgery on him. Talk to your vet and ask at what age your kitty should be neutered. Some do it at different ages.
Jake only has one of the symptoms, sneezing, and was adopted from a foster home of Friends of Abandoned Pets, along with his brother (who was adopted by the people next door). He was never around very many other cats, in fact as far as I know, only his brother. Also, I can't see how stress could cauase an URI in this case because he has frequent play dates with his brother next door (at least one a day), and he never looks sad or upset, but rather playful and upbeat. I do not believe that he has an URI, but thanks to everyone for helping, I can sleep a little easier at night now. I most certainly will ask my vet about it though, and will let you all know what the verdict is once I have found out.
