As you all know, my beautiful Skye is 17 and , aside from elevated pancreatic enzymes, is doing very well. I've been giving her cartrophan injections weekly for arthritis and prednisone 1x daily for arthritis but also for those pancreatic levels. She responded well to pred, so we chose to keep her on it at this time.
Last night I was freaked out--she was NOT herself. She hasn't had a BM since having many on Weds and into the late afternoon hours. She also had some very soft poop, and I figured some food she'd eaten was likely irritating her pancreas. She did do much better after I gave her some extra meds, went to work and had a very happy kitty. Weds-Thursday night, she woke me every hour howling. She's been doing that late night howling for years now, so I didn't think much of it. She was hungry, ate a ton and had her water----just seemed to want food.
Thursday she was a bit better, and Friday....I was terrified. She was down right too quiet, not really wanting to eat much (would eat, then not want the food the next time), was even seemingly not wanting water. My vet clinic wasn't able to see her today, so I gave her some extra bupe and a quarter pepcid AC and....WHAT a difference!!! She slept SOUNDLY, stretched out (normally she had her leg up/hitched a lot), and she has a good appetite, drinking water----still no BM, but I plan to give her an extra 1/2 prednisone tonight and for whatever reason, that seems to help her go to the bathroom.
So, I'm now wondering if her howling was due to stomach pain/nausea/acid reflux and not 'older kitty syndrome"? And now I feel horrid for missing this sign!!! I plan to continue 1/4 pepcid AC daily until we see the vet Tuesday (they are closed Monday which is rather annoying but so be it)
I did a search online and found that howling can be a sign of nausea. She has not thrown up in a month or two....when she used to easily be sick at least once a week. So, that's good news. The problem is, she may not present with typical pancreatic flares like Bandit did.
As a result, I'm a hypersensitive mess, thinking she'll get sick and pass away and with the long weekend, I"m feeling stuck.
However, she's fine and trying to comfort ME. Ugh.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year.
