Five-year-old indoor only cat, loss of 4 pounds in six weeks, eating very little, feline/aids test-negative ,normal bloodwork except low chloride, low sodium, x-rays show a little bit of asthma other than that unremarkable, Urinating fine. Veterinarian not sure what is going on. Anybody have any ideas?

I am so sorry you are having to go through this with your little one. I have more questions than ideas right now sadly.

Have they given you anything to manage the eating issue?
New food, or same?
Any vomiting?
What, if any tests are they thinking going forward?

PS welcome to the cat site - though I'm sorry this is what brought you hear.

I feed Purina one for sensitive stomach it wasn’t because of him though is because of the other cat who has tummy issues and diarrhea issues. And that food seems to have corrected it.
I would feed canned food more as a treat than as a daily thing, though for the past month I’ve been trying to give Brady canned food just to get him to eat. The Purina pro plan wet food and Fresh pet. He’s lost about 4 pounds in six weeks. He did have some vomiting but no diarrhea. He’s had bloodwork, x-rays, and an ultrasound. The vet just prescribed him prednisone today. He’s thinking possible lymphoma. He called the other vet to come look at his x-rays also. But there is no conclusion there was some discussion of possible doing a needle aspirate of his lymph nodes. Needless to say this past week, I’ve spent a lot of money, trying to figure out what was going on with him. He’s a young cat he just turned five. So the vet said normally lymphoma is older cats so he’s not sure what’s going on with him.

Ditto on the welcome to TCS, despite what brought you here. And ditto on the questions too. However, I think more testing is needed besides what has been done. If not eating well, that alone could attribute to the low chloride and sodium, but they could also be indicators/clues to what more to test, as well as the asthma.

That is too much weight to lose in that period of time, and you need to pursue further analyses. Ask your vet for a referral to a specialty group, which includes many disciplines beyond just an internal medicine specialist. Such a group facility can consult with each other based on what they think, so more minds to look at the issues. The testing that has been done can be shared with them and perhaps shed some light on what else to look for. I strongly advise you go this roure, and the sooner the better.

In the meantime, as mentioned above, looking for temporary help through anti-nausea and appetite stimulant meds might help as you get into see a specialist.

:alright: A humble, sympathetic welcome to TCS! I agree about the anti-nausea and appetite stimulant. Also, be sure to give only filtered or good fresh well water. Adding unflavored Pedialyte might help improve the electrolytes - you can boil chicken or hamburger to make a broth. Will he eat Gerber Stage 2 beef or ham? You can ask the vet about adding red raspberry leaf tea to help ease nausea as well (it's often sold as pregnancy tea for morning sickness).

prednisone
Could you check the bottle and or pills whichever it is and see if it says prednisone or prednisolone.

IMHO and I'm not a vet, but in my experience with deals with cats we lovingly call "lemons" AKA they all have issues. Getting kitty eating is a top priority. Without that any treatment, regardless of what the illness is, will be a challenge.

Has your vet suggested anything yet?

He did have some vomiting but no diarrhea. He’s had bloodwork, x-rays, and an ultrasound. The vet just prescribed him prednisone today. He’s thinking possible lymphoma. He called the other vet to come look at his x-rays also. But there is no conclusion there was some discussion of possible doing a needle aspirate of his lymph nodes. Do you know the location of the lymph nodes they were considering a FNA and why a FNA rather than a biopsy?

On the symptoms you described - I can see why they wouldn't be sure what's up. The reason for the sickness can range all over the map. So additional testing is probably needed.

Does he / she normally see this vet or normally doesn't go to vets? If kitty gets regular check ups do they have any vaccinations like rabies / FLV etc?

Honestly the way I'm reading all this right now is that the best way we can help is to help you get as much info as clear as you can and get a list together for you to take back to the doc. With questions and perhaps additional things that might help you to help kitty and the doc as it's such a mystery.

You mentioned the xrays were mild asthma and bloodwork other than a little off, was fine...

What about the ultrasound though?
