Roundworms and ascarids are the same thing. As @SuperPooper said, they are wormed with Strongid (pyrantel pamoate) at two-week intervals two or three times. We usually do them twice before having a fecal exam done, or else have the adopting family have their vet do a fecal check when they take the kitten for an exam. After two wormings, if they are negative, we don't do a third worming, but we don't bother with the fecal test first because we automatically worm all kittens. We do ask everyone to take their kitten to the vet for a check up within 72 hours of adoption even if the kitten has already been wormed and vaccinated. Most vets will give a free exam to any adopted kitten and only charge for any services, such as a fecal test. The vet will check the kitten' heart to make sure it sounds normal, check ears and eyes etc. and it i a good way to start a relationship with a vet. Personally, I recommend finding an AAHA approved animal hospital which has at least one vet who specializes in cats, or an AAHA approved Cats Only hospital.
