Shrove Tuesday (and Lent)

Yummy idea! Pure Maple Syrup for me, please! Although I'm not Catholic, I enjoy observing Lent and have been pondering what to fast this year. For years now, along with some other item, I've tried giving up not getting adequate sleep, but have never succeeded. Perhaps this year would be the charm.

Well I'm Lutheran, and we have Lent.

And I have NEVER heard of this whole pancake thing either!! I don't get it though

What is it all about and why? Is it just like - you have lotsa pancakes before you give something up? Does anyone know where it came from?

Oh and for Lent I am giving up TCS

Seriously though, I am going to try to be on the computer less and give up soda & umm, MOST chocolate. I'm going for reasonable goals here-

i LOVE pancakes with ham and cheeze inside them. In Holland their pancakes are so big, it's hard to finish just ONE...unless you get the little itty bitty ones, which I wont even attempt to spell out, they are good too! about the size of a gold dollar...

Pancakes??? HUH????? Sorry if I'm being a tad ignorant, but my religious observances are just not up to scratch. I didn't know there were PANCAKES involved with Easter!!!

I don't give up anything for lent - I already live as a vegetarian / trying real hard to be vegan (lol) so I think that's enough!

What does Shrove mean, is that a pancake? I love learning what goes on in other parts of the world!

If the Mardi Gras during Manchester Pride isn't the day before Ash Wednesday, than it isn't really Mardi Gras. Mardi means Tuesday & Gras means fat which is always the day before Ash Wednesday. I guess it can be considered a faux Mardi Gras.

I know Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, but it also means 'An occasion of great festivity and merrymaking'!!

We're all definitely learning a lot from this!

As for why we eat pancakes, it's because as Lent is the next day, all the fats and creams have to be used up - so pancakes are made! There are also pancake races held in many villages across the UK!

oo oo oo me too! I love pancakes dripping with lemon juice and enough brown sugar to make them sticky

I missed Shrove Tuesday, but I'll do them tonight instead... DH LOVES my pancakes

Some U.S. members may be more familiar with the expression , "Donut Day" for Shrove Tuesday. "Mardi Gras" or "Carnival" are more widespread.

Is there some sort of British tradition that I'm not familiar with? I mean, because I'll celebrate a holiday basd soley on the consumption of pancakes any day!

I don't celebrate Easter or Lent (though, I do go home on Easter at the request of my staunchly Catholic Nonnie), but Mardi Gras...boy, is Mardi Gras fun

in the good ol' days, people didnt believe in waste so they used all the naughty foods up on shrove (confession) tuesday. the most cost effective thing to make with eggs, milk, sugar, butter was pancakes as you only had to add flour.

this has to do with religion as you are celebrating one day of freedom to eat like a king before lent.
