Okay so I am currently 11 weeks pregnant and the rabies vaccine is not recommended by my midwife but Im still very concerned. I saw three kittens (eyes open, ears perked and playing) across the street and decided to go check it out. When I got over there I sat down on the neighbors porch and tapped my hand on the ground. One kitten approached slowly and probably just curious but when I reached my hand out to try and touch it it bit my finger. The bite is a small puncture wound which I cleaned with soap and water and immediately put neosporin on. I knew rabies was a concern with a stray kitten so I called animal control who set a live trap for the animal. The next day we caught the kitten in the trap but animal control did not come to retrieve it. I called every day for four days and no one called back or came to get the kitten. It was acting normally (besides hissing alot when humans came near) It meowed at its mother and ate dry cat food/drank water that I placed in the trap. We watched it for four days and it had no wounds from a bite or anything. My animal control website for our county says there have been no cases of a human or domestic animal with rabies in the last 10 years at least. We did let the animal go at the end of the fourth day because it was just too cruel to live it in the trap. Now since releasing the kitten I have seen the mom, the two siblings but not the kitten that bit me. Its been almost a week and I have not seen the kitten once. I am beginning to really worry it died or maybe it did have rabies and I should get the vaccine. Help please
Also I contacted my local health department who said theres less then a 1% chance that a domestic animal in my area has rabies as they have not even had one case of a bat with rabies this year. They also said the only animals that have been found in this area with rabies in the last ten years have been bats.
