My cat Rocco is 14 soon to be 15. While he's pretty healthy overall, He has slight asthma issues brought on occasionally by seasonal allergies. For the last few years I e noticed these huge, hard boogies that fly out when he has a sneezing attack. It seems to have increased from rarely to a daily basis and I have taken him to a feline specialist that diagnosed him with asthma and allergies. Does anyone have advice or experiences with this? I don't want to keep giving him Prednisone. I'm afraid of the side effects it can cause.

Asthma can be treated with inhaled medicine such as Flovent. Ask your vet if that is suitable for your cat's asthma.

An antihistamine may help the seasonal alleries. Again, ask the vet. There are some OTC Human anthihistamines that can be used in cats at a very small dose.

Allergy reducing recommendations for people with asthma and allergies may also help. Use a HEPA air purifier, keep the HVAC clean and maintained and use a HEPA filter, vacuum often to limit dust, etc.

Pred does have its risks but you have to weigh them against the benefits. Many cats only need a short course of pred on a as needed basis, usually starting at a high dose and then tapering off. Diabetic-like symptoms are common on a high dose but they go away as the dose is reduced. Long term pred use can cause diabetes in some cats but diabetes is very easily managed.
