scratching in front of ears

I have a stray cat that I have been feeding for awhile now. She has been putting on weight, but I have noticed that she is scratching her head bloody right infront of her ears. It is scabbing some, I did put flea drops on her when my grandchildren started to play with her. Do you think she may have had an allergic reaction. If so is there anything I can do for her. I really dont have money to take her to the vet, since I already have two dogs and a cat I have to take. Any ideas?
