Hello, All: My cat, 14, is having twitchy/scratchy ears, head-shaking and a bit of respiratory huffing (though not sneezing). No discharge from eyes or nose, and no smell from her ears, no visible parasites or crust. I am anticipating that ear mites might nonetheless be the diagnosis and need to know what treatments are both effective and verifiably safe. I do not wholly trust my vet, with whom I have an appointment Monday. (A cat specialist, she previously prescribed metronidazole for IBD, which nauseated Puff and made her stool worse.) It's also possible my cat has early kidney disease; I need to retest for that in a few months.
Puff is eating well (I transitioned her to raw, which HAS helped her IBD) and acting as if she feels well, apart from the episodic behaviors I've described, which began several months ago and seem to be getting a bit worse. I also have ordered lactoferrin in case this is an unusual presentation of a herpes flare, but the more I read, the more I think that's unlikely.
