I have a shelter cat with a very round abdomen that multiple vets can't seem to explain. Roxanne came in as a pregnant stray, had complications during delivery and ended up needing an emergency c-section and spay surgery. It's been 3 months since she had her kittens (who were all very healthy and all combo tested neg. at 10 weeks old) and she still has a round belly that makes her look pregnant.

She was FIV/FeLV negative at the end of September and has had to standard blood panels pulled (at the time of surgery and about 3 weeks ago) which all came back relatively normal. She had slightly elevated white blood cells but she also had rodent ulcers at the time that we were waiting to treat until her kittens were weaned.

She had an ultrasound 3 weeks ago because one vet had a concern for FIP but there was no free-fluid found and the office that performed the ultrasound was not concerned for FIP. However, the initial vet that performed the ultrasound thought she saw a 5-6 cm mass behind her bladder, initially thinking it might be a stump pyometra or some weird extra uterine mummified kitten that may have been missed. We booked her for exploratory surgery the following week. The surgeon did another ultrasound but didn't find the mass that the initial vet saw; second vet at the clinic took a look and also did not see anything. X-rays were taken - still nothing seen. X-rays were sent to a board certified radiologist who agreed that there was nothing abnormal on the x-rays. Because she was otherwise healthy and normal (eating/drinking/urinating/defecating/great demeanor) the surgeon was not comfortable with exploratory surgery. He said to just keep an eye on her and look out for any changes with her, and that maybe that's just where she carries her fat.

Now, she is slightly overweight after her kittens. She was 15lbs at her last exam and should probably be closer to 12lbs. She has some fatty pockets on her hips and shoulders but otherwise doesn't look like a typical "fat" cat.

Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before or if anyone has any ideas regarding things we haven't tested for yet. She's currently on a diet (which she hates) but otherwise appears healthy. Her rodent ulcers have healed with steroids, her coat is healthy and shiny, she's comfortable and active... so we're at a bit of a loss. Maybe this is just her, but I want to have all of the bases covered.

Hi!
How much exercise does she get? .... Thinking of helping her reach her goal and then not have to eat diet food :)

She's been back at the shelter since the kittens were weaned so it's limited but she's had a whole room to herself (vs caged) and has the ability to run around and jump onto different levels, plus play time. Her diet has been calorie monitoring, so not the diet versions of food they have out there. She's been on limited ingredient turkey based food to try to identify the allergen that caused the rodent ulcers.

I guess the only other thing I can think of would be a cat wheel, if she'd use it.

That's quite the diameter she has there, it almost looks as if it might be pushing her lower ribs out a bit.

Looking at her, you would think she was pregnant, or has a giant beer gut. If it is in fact just how she holds her weight.. it's something I've never seen before.

Where do you think?
Looks almost like a birth defect. It looks like her rib cage juts out a bit or was compressed in the womb. Can you feel her ribs if you run your fingers down her side? Does she have breathing difficulties?

Nothing abnormal can be felt with her ribs and she doesn't have any breathing difficulties. She's had multiple x-rays (before her emergency surgery and as prep for the second surgery that was planned) and there nothing was noted to be off with her rib cage, but that also wasn't specifically being looked at. If you put your hands on both sides of her bulge, it feels like she has a basketball inside of her (very round). Other than the rodent ulcers and waxy ears (we've been equating both to allergies), she is normal with no obvious health concerns.
