Necks are pretty advanced for a kitten, imo.  You might try chicken ribs... the flat ones from the breast side of the ribcage.  The regular ribs from the backside could work as well, just might be a little awkward. 

He really does need that bone content; besides the mental stimulation, the jaw workout, and dental benefits, the marrow in the bones contains lots of wonderful micronutrients.  Eggshell is a decent sub for a while, but I wouldn't rely on it for the long term.  jmo.

he had 1/3 of a neck today.. I will try the ribs again next week. I've given it to him before (few months ago).. he just didn't bother eating any of it.

1/3 of a neck is good! When I started feeding my cat necks I cut them in 1/3s too, granted the necks from Hare-Today are HUGE! I still have some 1/3 bits of necks for treats. :)

That's great! Coincidentally tonight is the night I feed necks, too.
