I was 11 years old and was racing on my bike. I ran into a tree going as fast as I could go. I flew up in the air and came down in a gravel driveway. The back of my head cut open and I had a concussion. I had the worse headache of my life that night.

I fell off my bike when I was 9 (hit a pothole and went over the handle bars). Knocked out my front tooth (adult tooth), cracked two other teeth, skinned my arms and legs, and hit my head hard enough that I literally do not remember anything until I went back to school two weeks later. Seriously, nothing. I even remember being confused about why I was so far behind on our reading because I thought it had just been the weekend. My Mom, being my Mom, took me to the dentist right away but I never saw a doctor. I still give her a hard time that I had head trauma and never had a real doctor look at me for that. Her stance is the dentist would have noticed if something was really wrong, because having no memory for two weeks isn't a problems apparently.

I have had six root canals, wore braces for a few months to keep the teeth in place (still have all my real teeth), and had two surgeries to my gum line to remove a stubborn infection that set in at the base of the damaged teeth all directly related to the accident. On top of that I've had several unrelated root canals just because my family doesn't have the best luck with teeth despite regular brushing, flossing and cleanings. I tend to get the evil eye from dentists first seeing my x-rays because I have very few teeth that haven't had something done to them.

But.... No broken bones or anything more then sprains and strains beyond that. I did fall down stairs about six months ago and still have a bump, bruising and swelling on my shin and ankle. Nothing can be done for it but wait for it to heal.

I don't really know. Many years ago, I was in a bad car accident. It was my fault. I was driving, tried to make the turn off the highway and reacted too quickly and lost control of the car. I hit a tree stump and the car flipped. Hit the second tree stump and the car flipped again. Going into the third flip, the car hit the front corner of the house and came to rest on the driver's side. I was able to crawl out of the driver's window between my car and the house, stood up and brushed myself off, and knocked on the door of the house. The people had immediately gotten out of bed and came to the door. We called the police, I had to go to the hospital for a concussion and to have glass pulled out of my cheek. I had two pretty nasty black eyes. My car was totaled. To this day, I have a scar on my left cheek from the accident. But considering that I wasn't wearing a seat belt and the car flipped completely over end to end twice, I'd say I was pretty lucky.

Honestly, I don't remember that I've ever been really seriously injured. Fell off my bike a couple times; my mom got to the point where she started to bathe me in iodine and mercurochrome because of cuts and scratches; it's not easy to try to stand on your bike when it's going down the road. Your standard black eyes, a broken toe, things like that, meniscus surgery on my knee, a wisdom tooth removed. Nothing really major, or if they were, I don't remember them.

V verna davies , I too, have a severed tendon in my hand (1982, maybe), from an accident on an assembly line in a bottle factory. It is my right thumb. Rushed to surgery and had a cast up to my shoulder all summer. Luckily, I have full use of my hand, just can't fully bend my thumb. I hope you are ok.:hugs:

My worse injury was from a medication in 1995 that is now listed in my chart as an allergy. It caused SIADH and I was hospitalized one week and fluid restriction for two weeks. It was completely reversible, however.:)

A few years ago, I had a concussion from slipping and hitting my head in the bathtub. I didn't realize I had it until the next day, at the doctors. At the doctor's urging, I did not put off any longer, installing the safety strips in my tub.

cassiopea cassiopea , V verna davies , muffy muffy , Kieka Kieka , sending good wishes to all! :hugs:

I have to think about that one..I would say the motorcycle accident I was in 1997, Just going down the road real slow-I was the passenger. My ex tried to deflect the incoming turning car but we lost. We both went flipping over handlebars. He got some bruising, I got a good sized gash in my head-I think that's when I turned into a rebel-I came so close to loosing my life-or rather a rude awakening-I got off with not too much injury-I was lucky==it was the first of a few wide awakening episodes of life I had happen. I got stitches on left side of head-lost some hair there-some road rash on arms/wrists. I was wearing leather short boots so my feet were spared, also wore long jeans-never wore open toe shoes on a bike or shorts. It was 90 out that day.

We were on our way to see his daughter at a recital for clogging...The police said I was pretty abrasive with them-kept pushing the paramedics away saying I didn't have insurance and just let me go home-I will tend to it myself since I had some first aid experience even back then. Of course they laughed at me-To this day I have no memory of that day. I vaguely remember the striped shirt and jeans I wore, still have those boots-my Tom McCan lucky boots-theres a slice across one from the accident-but I still wore them for many years. But I don't even remember getting on the motorcycle that day.

They said I was sitting on the back eating a bag of potato chips=which is so me-even back then I was always hungry and I was probably rushing home from work and then need to get to the event without dinner-that was normal for me back then.

The point I came to=I was on the bed getting my head stitched up and it was midnight-the accident was late afternoon. I remember trying to push the doctor away from stitching me up=feeling something on my head made me freak out-not sure why I was awake the entire time and not know it? I then freaked out and said I have to call my boss as I was working independently on 2 accounts every morning at 4am-and they wouldn't release me to go do the jobs I need to do-I remember calling her and feeling bad that I couldn't work. I didn't feel any pain until the next day-I remember vividly how much I hurt afterwards. I since then bought a motorcycle helmet that most times I wear religiously but I sure miss the days of no helmet on the back roads.

I came out of it pretty intact and it could have been worse-it took me many years to ride again-I still have some fears on city roads and clench up. But I probably feel better if I was in control of the bike-it's hard being a passenger-I feel like I have 0 control...which is something I can't stand.

foxxycat foxxycat , oh, thank God you are alright! The brain is amazing, like you were saying about being a bit abrasive and not remembering. When I was being rehydrated for my med allergy, I remember nurses putting me back to bed because they found me banging my IV stand into the corridor walls and trying to pull my lines out, but I don't remember.:dunno:

Take good care, all my friends who posted here.:hugs:

Some years back, I fell in my office. On the surface sounds like this wouldn't be so bad, right?

Well what really happened was the cleaning person left an upright vacuum cleaner in our back storage room which was incredibly small and dark. I didn't notice it. Tripped over the vacuum, and landed butt down onto a step stool.

At first, I thought "oh good, I didn't fall" but...what had happened was my left leg got twisted around the stool in such an odd and mangled way that I completely ruined my entire leg for the most part.

Torn meniscus and nearly tore my quadricep muscle (in fact, at first the doctor thought it was). The bruising I experienced was from my foot all the way up to my thigh. I could NOT walk at all.

Somehow made it home and then, was out of work for an entire month. It took forever to heal - went through a lot of physical therapy for it and in the end, had to sue my company for the Worker's Comp to reimburse for lost wages.

The whole thing was so dumb and astonishing that I was as injured as terribly as I was. I've had other falls resulting in bad injurious over the years but this one was above and beyond.

I've had a lot of injuries and broke things. But the two worst were horse related.
Had a mustang I was training come at me, knocked me over and plowed her hoof into my leg. Sliced the calf, about 2.5" above the heel, all the way across and so deep it actually nicked the Achilles tendon. Then the stupid doctor stitched it without cleaning it thoroughly and it got infected. Pulled out 32 small blood clots when I finally got him to clean and restitch it. Was on crutches for 2 months while that one healed.
The second was when my horse reared and came down on my head. Split my skull open. Thank God for a hard head. Had a concussion but other than that I was fine. Man head wounds bleed a lot. Didn't know I had that much blood to spare.

I had the left side of my face ripped off by a collie dog when I was 18 months old. I spent my childhood going for plastic surgery and radiation therapy (I glowed neon pink for a while!). I remember after one specialist plastic surgery in London, UK (we lived at the other end of the country) when I was 8, we had to stay for a week until my stitches came out. We went to visit Trafalgar Square where all the punks with their brightly dyed mohican haircuts and safety pins through their noses were hanging out, this was 1982, and they came over to me to tell me how cool my deep purple stitches looked! I remember feeling rather special thanks to them! I used to get bullied as a child and get called "scarface" and have been left with life-long psychological damage. But, people don't notice it nowadays (well, those also with facial scars do) and it's been with me so long that it no longer bothers me.

I feel a bit odd about writing this. But, hey, that's life.

I've never sprained or broken anything, but one of my discs herniated when I was sixteen. All I did was turn around, then suddenly I was on the ground in the worst pain of my life. Pretty much the entirety of my lower back is now herniated in various directions, but that first one was definitely the worst.

My worst injury was in 2012, at work. I tripped over an out turned stretcher wheel, falling forward, towards a counter. I tried turning my body so that I would not hit, face first..
I had my right arm outstretched, trying to grab the counter, instead, I grazed the counter, ending up hanging by my arm, up against the drawers, hitting my bad knee, when I fell.

Yup it was in a hospital. Ended up breaking my upper arm, near the shoulder; my dominant arm and also my work arm. I swear I also dislocated the shoulder, because I could feel it moving back into place, , a couple of times, once when I was put on a stretcher, the other time, when I was being wheeled down to the ER.

Ended up with shoulder issues after the break healed.. yup, workman's comp.. and it was a career ending injury.. Did not have surgery for the break. I swear I pushed it in place. I could visualize what I was doing. I did end up with surgery for the shoulder, and could have more, anytime I wish... no thank you.. I have had enough. Two rounds of physical therapy, months in a sling, no thank you.. ICE is my friend.

To top it off: the person who left the stretcher that way, was my Supervisor!!!! IDIOT...
I never, ever got an apology from her. She had been told not to leave the wheels sticking out.. but yet she continued.. even when I tried returning to work.. Instead, she ended up terminating me...yup, an entire psychological nightmare.. they did not want to deal with me and my restrictions, so they found ways to really work on my mind.. resulting in terminating me.. They did a number on my mind, making me question my own judgement. I was always wrong with everything, and they picked up on any and every mistake I made.. even watching me to the minute as to how long I took for lunch and my doctor order icing breaks.. tons more stuff also.. Yes, I made mistakes, but I was trying to return back to a career of over 34 years....and I was out of work for months.. try to remember routine procedures, along with learning 'new' things, without a procedure manual!!! crazy..

Anyway.. that is over and done with. I am in a better place now.. a very toxic work environment.. Funny thing, I was thinking of changing jobs, just before the accident happened.

My worst injuries aren't anything big. Pulled a tendon in my knee and sprained an ankle which continually gives me trouble. It's so weak it gives out on me when I do stairs sometimes ( scares my cats half to death when I come falling down the stairs lol) and I sprain it again. My worst fear is that I will fall carrying one of my cats or Guinea Pigs. Hopefully will never happen though.

Nothing compared to many of the ones already posted. I had a couple of cracked ribs when I was heavy duty into martial arts. It was from being beat on but we call it sparring when we are being all civilized in a martial arts class. I pretty much zigged when I should have zagged.
