Most importantly the anesthesia is much shorter. A neuter only takes the vet a few minutes versus up to 30 minutes for a spay. Also, most vets will give pain medication, usually butorphanol for a few days afterwards as well. As far as weight gain after a spay, I feed a low calorie cat food, and try to play with me cat everyday to keep her lean. Good luck!
