Around what age do dogs go through their first heat and how do you know?
(sorry for the dumb question).
My dog is 8 or 9 months old and I don't think she's gone into heat yet, but is there any signs or things tht happen when they are in heat that would give me a clue????Originally Posted by Loveysmummy
A female can come into heat generally anywhere from 4-6 months of age.
She should be spayed ideally before her first heat.
Gracie is a Sharpei cross (with what I believe to be German Shepard). I took in her in when no one else would because she's a mutt and high strung and my son even calls her little sister. It's going to be heart breaking to find her a new home (I'm hoping that something good will happen and we'll be able to keep her).Originally Posted by catloverin_ks
Man, that stinks! I have also heard that they come into heat about 6 mos. I am quite sure Amy just got done being in heat. I noticed her cleaning herself constantly and also her "area" looked rather swollen. BTW-what kind of dog is Gracie? Good luck on getting her spayed.
Yea I agree about chainning her...like I said, she has no unsupervised time outside.Originally Posted by Loveysmummy
How much exercise does she get per day? The oft adage of a "Tired dog is a good dog" is very true.
I would really think twice about keeping her chained in the backyard anyway. Its a bad idea, especially if she is not spayed and potentially going into heat. Males will come from all around and a fence wouldn't stop them.
Keep her inside.
Also, there are many dangers with leaving a dog outside..such as you encountered..There are crazy neighbours, teasing kids, other animals, etc..
Good Luck getting her fixed soon.
