Question about canned cat foods

I've been feeding my kittens Nutro natural choice dry food. I like the idea that it doesn't contain any by-products.

They've been eating some canned cat food as a supplement. We've been using Fancy Feast. I'm interested in the Nutro canned foods. From what I've read, it seems that foods that have been tested using feeding trials are what 'should' be used. The Nutro dry food has been tested in this way, but not the canned foods. I wonder why this is. Would this be a good brand to feed to my kittens as a supplement to their dry diet? How important are the feeding trials?

I use the Authority brand canned food that ( I think) is Petsmart's brand. It's good quality.
