All you people out there who rehome strays you find, how do you come up with adoption fees?
I have a lot of cats currently who need homes. I have the police department giving out my phone number to people who call with strays or need helo catching them. Everyone seems to leave them when they move away too.
There are 3 adult male strays (including my Willoughby who I took in about a month ago) there is a litter of 5, 3 or 4 month kittens, and one 5 months old female kitten.
For Willoughby I had him neutered, tested, vaccianted, dewormed, flea treated. I would like to help get some of that back so I can keep on doing this sort of thing in the future until I can offically open my own rescue shelter someday. I probably spent about $100 on him. Is $70 asking too much as a fee since he comes fully vetted? I have had some people totally willing to pay for a cat who is healthy and vetted. But a lot of people turn away from that. I always put negotiable next to it, is that a good or bad idea?
For the others, I found a place that will speuter, deworm, vaccinate for $45. I though of charging $50 for their adoption fee because the place is an hour away from me. Is this too much? I understand that I am not an offical shelter and people may think it is crazy to charge that much for a cat. Am I being unreasonable? Is this a fair adoption fee since all their vetting is done? I have seen shelters charge anywhere from this amount to over $100 for adoptions. I don't want to be too high, but I don't want to run myself into bigger debt then I already have either. I see free kittens all the time and Iwill not go that route obviously. I have seen people charge $10 but their kittens are not even seen by a vet yet. If I ever rehome a kitten who isn't altered yet, it is $15 and I give the people 2 weeks to make an appointment and they will get $10 back when they prove the cat has been spayed or neutered.
What do you guys think? Am I being unreasonable?
