Is she on a grain-free diet?  That might help.  Also, we do treat Hannah with nose drops from time to time and it does help.

What kind of nose drops? My poor kitty was just diagnosed with pseudomonas, and the lab said it responded to marbofloxacin, which we'll be ordering tomorrow morning. In the mean time, I'd like to find out what are these nose drops you all are using?

My girl has been confirmed with Pneumonia for the 3rd time this year. She has only been off antibiotics for three weeks this time. I was thinking of using just antibiotic eye drops but haven't at this stage. What drops do you use. the vet has suggested a grain- free diet which will be difficult with her as she refuses to eat cooked or fresh meat. She will only eat dry and canned food which of course is full of grains. This time she has been put on Doxycycline antibiotics for two weeks. Has the grain-free diet made any difference to your cat?

I have told my vet that this problem appears to be rather common! My girl is a pedigreed Oriental who is 6 years old. She was a breeding cat and show exhibit.

Murison, What is the common name for the marbofloxacin as I haven't heard of it where I come from.

Also Murison you mentioned Zenequin. What type of antibiotic is that as once again I haven't heard of it!

my guy has been treated for pseudomonas for more than a year now with various antibiotics. it is an infection that is virtually impossible to cure EXCEPT i started to give norman l-lysine treats and what a difference.  for now the discharge from his nose has subsided and breathing is quiet and no coughs.  i will also start him on interfueron which was recommended by the specialist at the emergency vet hospital.  he's eating normally again since i assume he can smell his food better.--get l-lysine...comes in different flavors. i had to return the fish flavored one and get the chicken liver one.  my vet ordered it for me which is way cheaper that pets mat or petco.

Your vet needs to do a culture and sensitivity test on your kitty's discharge.  The culture will positively diagnose the infection and the sensitivity test will tell the vet which medication will best treat the infection.  We had to do 2 rounds of Zenequin, 30 days for each round with a culture and sensitivity test in between each round of antibiotics.  Don't treat the infection willy-nilly, find the best antibiotic to treat the infection so your kitty doesn't develop an immunity to any antibiotics it might need later on.    You need to get the secondary infection totally cleared up so that you're not running back and forth to the vet and so that your kitty can get well.  We were on the sick, treat with an antibiotic, get well, stay well for 2 weeks, then get sick again merry go round for 8 months before we finally went to a vet who recommended the C&S test.  That was a lifesaver!

To help the overall health of our cat (she has feline herpes as well), we switched to a grain free diet.  We also give her a daily antihistamine to help with her allergies which trigger an upper respiratory infection for her a lot of the time.  We also run Feliway diffusers 24/7 to help keep her stress level to a minimum as stress can trigger a flare up and increase her sensitivity to allergens.  She also gets a daily dose of Evening Primrose Oil to help overall inflammation in her nasal cavities as she is a chronic sneezer.  Lastly, we also give her Missing Link Feline Professional strength daily as a supplement.  The best thing we did to help our kitty, other than the C&S test, was switch her diet and work to keep her healthy and stress free.  If left untreated, pseudomonas can kill humans and animals.  It's normal to have some of the bacteria in your system or in your cat's system, but when it's running amok, it needs to be treated.

thanks for your input stephanie.  norman had a culture done which id'd pseudomonas and the antibiotics sensitive to it.  that certainly helped.  the l=lysine helped immeasurably!

My cat also has pseudomonas - and it's been a long road.

We've developed (after some time on the drugs) a resistance to Baytril and Clavamox and Ciprofil - and probably one or two others.

They work for a while - he's 'clear' for a while - and then it returns.

The medication he's on now is Zithromax - and that is working to clear him - my only fear is what happens after he becomes resistant to this drug?

I'm contemplating going to the U of Davis, Ca to speak to their vets..

Any more thoughts?

Hi Sharon,

I'm near you - in Folsom, CA. My sweet cat has pseudomonas in her nasal cavities. Is that what your at suffers from too? We've tried cipro and acetylcysteine antibiotics at my vet's recommendation. But not for nearly as long as some of these other folks. Neither has worked at all. I feel so bad for my poor baby. She's a pretty happy girl overall, but her "fits" just kill me. I just wanted to say hello since you are so close by.

I just wanted to say I'm so glad I found this message thread! I've been dealing with pseudomonas in my female 12-year-old cat for about a year now. I am relieved that most of you have had the same frustrating experience as me - I was feeling so alone in this struggle. :) I thought it was possibly just my vet not doing his job, but this bacteria is just so horrible and truly is as difficult to get rid of as he has told me. Has anyone had their cat pass away from this? That's my biggest fear. Sometimes she just struggles so much. I can handle the boogers and all the yucky stuff. She's a pretty happy cat overall. I just feel so sorry for her. Thanks for sharing everyone! I wish your sweet babies health and wellness. All the best...Elizabeth

Hi, D dkgmomof3 and welcome! This is an older thread, and some of the original posters may not be around any more. If you don't get responses here, feel free to start a new thread with any questions about your kitty.
