Hi guys!
I am thinking about asking my vet about putting my 14 year old ragdoll, Molly, on prozac.
Molly has always been very anxious, I adopted her from a family friend when she was 7 and was informed she was very timid which proved true when she hid under my bed for the first week of me owning her and she would barely eat or drink. It took her around 5 months to begin to roam freely around my house (I lived with my Grandparents but they rarely interacted with Molly) and property (around 20acres).
About 3 years later I moved to the city for university and Molly became more social with my Grandparents and much more demanding of me when I came home but ultimately she became less socialised in the time I was away and much more skittish.
Last year I moved into my own apartment and brought molly with me from my grandparents house.
She lived there for about 4 months and spent most of the time hiding but thats nothing out of the usual for her.
Now I've moved back to the city with her and my kitten Richard (she's lived with him for around a month prior to moving and has a standoffish relationship with him but not fear or aggression just more annoyance) She's lived here with myself, my boyfriend (who she's familiar with) and his roommate who is new to her but is soft spoken and she seem to not mind him and I know its only been about 2 months but she has a habit of hiding behind the TV amongst the cords and I'm worried about her electrocuting herself one day.
She also seems very sad and eats rarely and I'm worried about stress induced illnesses. When I pick her up, she will growl and occasionally spit but she never bats at me even with a closed poor and will only bite me if i pick her up in a uncomfortable position but if my housemates attempt to move her, understandably she is much more violent but still never with a open paw.
So I was wondering if prozac could help with her anxiety and aversion to people. I dont mind if she still isn't social, she's never been a cuddley cat, I just want to stop her from hiding in problematic spots much and maybe be a little more inclined to not think every things out to kill her (she has been seen hissing at 11hour old kittens before)!
P.S I have tried Catnip before, it doesn't seem to affect her nor Richard.
P.P.S I am already looking into catgrass and Feliway I'd just like opinions about prozac for this particular problem!
Thanks!

I don't know about Prozac in particular, maybe there is a different medication out there (I really don't know, ask your vet for advise) but from what you describe it might be the best option to give her a better quality of life.

I'm looking at it in a way where I'm putting myself in her shoes: if I were her, would I want and need mood stabilizing medication? My answer would be yes. From what you describe.

But make sure you have exhausted all other options to make her life more comfortable. Mind altering medication should always be a last resort.

Hi,
Before using a chemical maybe you can research about St John's wort in the web. One of my friends used it on their cats and she was really happy with the results (in a month)
Hope your kitty gets better

I think some people have tried giving their cat chamomile tea. Something that works on some cats is Bach's Rescue Remedy Pet. You put a few drops on a freeze dried treat *freeze dried texture holds the liquid better* and give it to them. Tommy built up a tolerance. I put my boys on Prozac because of a spraying problem we tried everything for. Stewart has to stay on it long term. I'm taking him in today for his annual for more meds. I took Tommy off in December after about a year and a half. He's a little more high strung, but not actively spraying everything.
There wasn't a huge personality change on the Prozac. They were sleepy for the first day or two, and then got back to their usual energy levels. The dosing is only 2.5 mg per day and the boys were good using Greenies Pill Pockets.

My instinct is to try food based calmers first. The best known are Composure (treats or liquid) and Zylkene (capsules - I open them up and mix them into the food). Anti anxiety meds can and do work wonderfully for stressed or anxious kitties, but they should be the last resort, not the first choice.

I see many holistic remedies/supplements have been suggested here. With any of these (including the ones I'm suggesting), you should ALWAYS run it past your vet first - especially when using herbal or homeopathic remedies. Some human supplements can be toxic to cats, so you really need to do your research first.
