I'm having a food problem with my girls. (For the record and just because I love sharing: 7 year old Milly, black and white tabby ; 3 year old Lady, orange and white tabby ; 2 year old Angel, gray tabby ; Mia, almost year old gray and tan, part maine coon ; and the baby, Kisa, 5 month old black and white tabby) I have a couple of picky eats.
I have been feeding them Purina One Naturals for the past year or so. They all loved it, and things were great. When we got the new kitten 3 months ago we bought some Purina Kitten Chow for her, which the others were crazy about. I'd mix it in with their food just so they'd leave poor Kisa's food alone!
Well about 3 weeks ago every single store in my area stopped carrying the Purina One Naturals. I fed the girls on Kitten Chow for a few weeks while I tried to hunt down their normal food, but no luck. About a week ago Lady started dropping weight. I bought a bag of IAMs mutli-cat household, since I've always heard amazing things about IAMs. That was 4 days ago. Her weight kept dropping. I was starting to get frantic, and I begged my mother to come over and bring some can food to see if maybe she'd eat that.
Sure enough, she's happily chowing down on the canned food and getting back up to a good weight. We checked her teeth throughly and can see nothing wrong, and I've been keeping up with a good teeth brushing schedule for all of them, so all I can think is she's just being picky about what she eats.
My mother has always told me that too much canned food isn't good for an animal. Her cats only get canned food once a month or so. That's how I've been doing it with my cats. Am I misguided here? I have so many questions I'm just going to number them!
1. Is canned food safe for cats to eat all the time?
2. If so, can someone suggest a good, healthy food for them?
3. If not, can someone suggest a good, healthy food that they've had luck with picky eaters on?
4. How often do you feed your cats canned food?
Is canned food even the right terminology? So much of it doesn't come in cans lol. Well, thank you in advance!
