Pregnant Mama Kitty, How Long to Wait?

I have a pregnant cat that we call Mama kitty.  I would like to know how far she is into pregnancy.  She has Pink nipples with some white crust on them.  She has a major increase in apatite!  Her belly is much bigger than it was last week. She is a calico mix.  Most websites I have been to say that she should be about 4 weeks till she has the kittens, but I'm not sure. Also, how can I tell when she is going into labor? My avatar is an old picture of her when she was younger.

sorry been awhile! she ended up with six kittens!  we had to put 4 kittens on her due to a wild kitty who refused to nurse her babies.

sorry about the confusion.  She had 6 kittens and we added four on her.  we have a total of 10 kittens on her.  This is along time after, she is no longer nursing those ten kittens.  I plan on getting most of those kittens adopted on Friday.  If not, looks like I have 10 more cats to care for.

They were born on Easter Friday, so they are a little more than two months old.   As I said, I am planning on taking them to a garage sale next Friday-Saturday.

WARNING -- do NOT just give them away!  Always charge a small fee  to weed out people who might be looking to use the kittens for bad purposes or who are not serious about owning a cat. Unless you know the people and have interviewed them somewhat, you have no idea where they might be going.  There are dog fighting people who use "free kittens" and "free puppies" as bait.  They will send their wives and kids to get the animals so nobody suspects (at least that is common in the south, you didn't say where you live).  Also, many people who take "free" kittens do not plan on getting them any vet care at all.  Unless you have already gotten them wormed and vaccinated, they are at risk of becoming sick so they should have those two things done immediately.

Before placing the kittens be sure to speak to the people who want to adopt them.  You need not print out a formal questionnaire or conduct a formal interview if you are uncomfortable with it (though some people do) but you should have a decent length talk witht hem and at a minimum cover the topics like:

-why they want a kitten/kittens

-if they have had cats or other pets before. if not, why not (should not be asked in an accusatory way- plenty of good reasons why not)

. if so, if they still have those pets and if not what happened to them. if they do still have the pets, how they plan to introduce them to the new kitten. who their vet is or was.

-who is in their household other than them. (kids? significant others?)

-views on declawing (don't let your kitty get his toes cut off!)

-what would cause them to give up the kitten

Also, you should always agree to take the kitten back if it doesn't work out.  This protects the kitten from just being passed off to another person who may not be a good home, or dropped off at a kill shelter etc.

For the people I have walked through this process, I have suggested they make up a short contract for each kitten, giving one copy to the adopter and keeping one for yourself.  That way you will know where the kittens are, and it also means people will have to THINK about what they are agreeing to.  Here is a sample (forget the form mess up, I can't make the copied form work in here for some reason, 3, 4 and 5 will not go back to the margin)

I hope you understand I'm just passing this along so you and your kittens have the besst possible chance at a good permanent home, and also getting spayed before age 4 months will assure that you will not be adding to the population of unwanted kittens and also will avoid lots of the problems that get slightly older kittens turned into shelters and animal control, i.e. going into heat, getting pregnant, howling, spraying etc.

Let us know how it goes.  The best new owners email you photos for awhile and I have one adopter who writes me every year on the anniversary of adopting his cat/kitten from me (3 years ago).
