You are probably making a good decision on a lot of level to switch to a new vet.

Honestly it was beyond rude!

Thankfully I managed to find the answer on google, it says it’s safe to use both but wouldn’t really make a difference from just using a single product, it does say too much prebiotic can cause diarrhoea though which the vet never mentioned at the appointment.
Decided to just use the Sustain Powder on her dry food as this is the less traumatic of the two choices.
She did have a little scratch at her wound earlier this evening and took the scab off but it’s not too bad and I’ve cleaned it with the wipes from the vets.
One thing that did alarm me at the appointment with the specialist is he said it could be caused by the steroid and “she would just have to live with it” not overly sure how true that is but was a little alarming, thankfully she’s eating, drinking and playing as normal and she isn’t going to the litter box more than usual so that’s a positive I’m trying to focus on(Or it would drive me insane).
I do plan to make a new post with better format so the information is easier to read in case others are going through same or been through same and have some advice.

So have a bit of an update!!!

As I said earlier the “Specialist” gave my kitty something called Sustain for her tummy(it’s a powder that’s sprinkled on the food).
They didn’t put the dose on the prescription and when I checked the box it said 1 packet for a 20KG Dog so I phoned the company who make the product and was told to immediately stop giving it to my kitty as it was only approved for dogs and one of the ingredients hadn’t been tested or approved in use for cats!
I immediately phoned the vets who said it was given in error and swapped it for a product called Fortiflora which is for cats, I asked why the error and I got told “The vet was using it off label” the company who make Sustain are getting in touch with the vets as this could of been dangerous using an untested or approved medication on a cat.
The Vets have basically told me 3 different things now, firstly it was been used off label, it was an error and the third story was that it was approved for cats(even though I showed them an email I have from the makers saying otherwise).

I have had very little luck with Fortiflora to help with diarrhea. We use Proviable DC (probiotic), Sacchromyces boulardii (from the health food store), and even Culturelle (probiotic from Walmart, drug store, Amazon, and etc) if it's really bad. This has worked so well for my kitty who has a sensitive tummy, is on RX food, and still has loose stools and sometimes diarrhea.

Will certainly keep this in mind but going to give the Fortiflora a chance first, she did pass a much better poop late last night, it was a bit softer than usual but formed so hoping it continues but that could just be vain hope at this point.

I have had good luck with Fortiflora when diarrhea was caused from antibiotics. But otherwise, I don't know. Now I understand why I could not find any info on Sustain for cats! I did see it for dogs and figured the one for cats must just not be available here in the U.S.or something.

I know vets sometimes go off label with things but to use something that isn’t approved or tested is just beyond belief more so when the company who make it said to stop use immediately.

Sorry to hear about your cat being ill.
Perhaps try her on organic cooked chicken, mix a little good bottled water with it. (Cook this yourself dont use a microwave oven)
Ive noted an improvement with my cat feeding her the above with water.
I note that someone on this site had trouble with probiotics. I use probiotics for our cat, Dr Mercolas probiotics. There is also an improvement with our cat with this. I understand important to get gut health correct, as immune system is the gut, approx 75%

Predisolone steroids can be good in short doses.
Im not sure if this would be the same in cats, but my son was on steroids for a long time and the steroids made his skin worse in the end. It caused topical steroid withdrawal.
Steroids are known to cause this problem. Use with caution. :)

Another thing I tried is Pet Plus.
But if you are going to use Pet Plus stop using probiotics if you are using them.
It will be a matter of trial and error. Exclusion of things then adding one thing in at a time.
I got the recomendation of Pet Plus from a Homeopathic vet.
Cats are all different, what suits one might not suit another.

My cat has allergies. Im using Quercetin for my cat its a natural antihistamine but It can have interactions with other things. One needs to check out thoroughly those things that quercetin interacts with. A side effect, It can reduce natural thyroid hormones.

Im not suggesting you use it.
The homeopathic Vet said I could use it for my cat.

Very happy to announce she has now had 2 normal poops!!!!
And her scratching seems to have eased and the scab has shrunk and seems to be healing nicely, going to continue with the cleaning wipes as it seems to increase healing speed, think it might have a soothing affect too.

Very impressed with the Fortiflora!

Not really sure with that one, she has been taking them for a few months now(6ish) the vet said she would most likely be taking them for life now although they will attempt to lower the dose once the skin has completely healed and fur grown back.

Thankfully the Fortiflora seems to be doing its job, I must admit it’s has really impressed me so will definitely be keeping it in from now on

Unfortunately that wouldn’t be possible as she has to have a hypoallergenic diet, they did say we can try again with the Purina Sensitive diet once the skin is fully healed and fur grown back if we want to but I don’t think it would be worth the risk after last time.

It seems your cat is now on probiotics ? fortiflora is probiotics ?
Most important to get the gut health right in your cat as you are doing, then the allergens should calm down.
Ive had similar with our cat, also we are an allergic family.
Pure organic food is good such as chicken. All cat food has preservatives ? these can be a problem. Is your cat allergic to fish do you know ?
